American realism is a term that encompasses 20th century schools of realism in the U.S and Canada. The Ashcan School painters such as George Luks and George Bellows depicted scenes of everyday life in early century New York. Regionalist Scene painters such as Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood were prominent in the Rural Midwest. The well known Canadian Group of Seven realist landscape painters included J.E.H. MacDonald, A.Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer, and Franklin Carmichael. Finally, well known Contemporary Realists include Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper.   continue on wikipedia »
